Coffee travels: Wyncote, PA Sumatra Café

I love trying out new places. Since we hadn't hit a coffee shop up in a while and had to run an errand in a different direction we decided to look for local flavor. Enter the Sumatra Café, at the corner of Glenside Ave and Greenwood Ave in Wyncote PA. It's a nice, clean, and well decorated cafe. With friendly staff, especially Terry behind the counter when we walked in.

As I usually do, I got a cold brew and a double espresso. My daughter got an iced coffee with cream and caramel cold foam. My wife got a sugar free French vanilla iced coffee. The drinks came out quickly. And all looked great.

For my beverages both were amazing. This is some of the best cold brew I have had. Flavorful with notes of chocolate and brown sugar. Maybe with a hint of orange. There was no acidity in the cold brew, it tasted smooth with a well rounded mouth feel.

For the espresso, a clean shot with good crema. Golden in color with a rich espresso. Again very little acidity, not bitter at all with a great taste. I asked Terry where they got their coffee, and he directed me to the shelf with Vibrant Coffee Roaster's offerings.

Both my wife and my daughter enjoyed their respective beverages. My wife is usually very discerning when it comes to her French vanilla iced coffee. She does not enjoy the lighter roasted bright flavors. To her they seem sour. This coffee passed muster, flavorful and sweet where it needed to be. My daughter really enjoyed hers as well. Hers was sweet and creamy like it should be the caramel was nice and tasty.

When I let her try my cold brew she agreed it was awesome and didn't need any cream or sugar. It was one of the best cold brews I have had recently.

I was curious about the name of the cafe so I asked the barista Terry, of all the coffee was Sumatran, he chuckled and said no; they do have Sumtran coffee specifically for pour-overs. Had I known that going in I would have probably gotten that. I love me some Sumatran coffee.

In addition to coffee and tea they also have offerings from a local French bakery, I didn't catch the name. They have sandwiches for lunch and breakfast as well as Indonesian food offerings. I wanted to eat everything. We settled on a coffee cake and it was great.

If you find yourself in Wyncote I would strongly suggest you make a pit stop in the Sumatra Café, for friendly people and tasty drinks. Where should we head next?
